Chapter 8

Elle

Something is going to keep us apart, I fear, as Nico and I slow dance under soft lighting.

It’s quite chilly outside, in the gorgeous garden, where festive, classical music plays near the door that leads out here, from a wireless speaker. The cold is a perfect excuse for Nico to hold me close, but what about after this dance? Where will the night take us? He’s a professor for God’s sake. I can’t lose my virginity to a professor five seconds after meeting him, can I?

Part of me wants to call my mom and talk it out with her, but how weird would that be? Mom, I met this seemingly perfect guy who makes me wetter than the ocean. What should I do? It would be too embarrassing, and we’d probably never look at each other the same way again! Things between us were awkward for weeks after she read Winter Virgin, even though she told me how proud she was of me for sticking with what felt right. I have to deal with this on my own.

“Is it too cold out here?” Nico asks, studying my face. “Do you want to go back in?”

I shake my head. “You paid five grand for a date and this dance.”

“I paid five grand so no other man would touch you,” he corrects, voice husky, eyes dark.

I suck my bottom lip into my mouth, considering how to respond when all I can do is shiver and burn deliciously where his hands are on my body. Virgil also talked like this when we were together, sounding possessive and hungry for every bit of me he could get at, but it never made me feel like giving in. All I could think about was how pushy and wrong for me he was. With Nico, all I can think about is how badly I want to sit on his beautiful face.

He waits for me to speak, noticeably content with just staring at his silently swaying dance partner.

Would it be like this in bed with the sexy older man? Could I take my time? I know with Virg I would’ve been rushed and uncomfortable. He couldn’t ever wait to let me speak. Not like he listened much when I did anyway. He was too busy smirking at what just came out of his own mouth. Smirking at his own cleverness.

“And I’ll be eternally grateful, Nico,” I say, “but I have to admit, I find your intentions a bit confusing. You wouldn’t let me write about you so I could avoid any scandal—but now you must know everyone is going to talk about me when someone mentions your name.”

This is a true test of a man’s character—how he reacts to being challenged. It’s a test Virg failed. “Suss out the next one’s nature before you agree to date them,” Professor Hudson suggested, and I intend to.

The fact that he told Nico about tonight is a good sign. He knows I’m marriage-minded. He wouldn’t encourage an admirer who’d just toy with me and isn’t seriously interested in commitment.
